The images that Steve paints and repurposes, using old wood, are all paintings within paintings. In this series, Steve breaks his paintings down, not only in stature, but by focusing on one element and draws sole attention to it as he creates a new story. These Small Measure pieces have isolated a key aspect of a previous composition and present it as the primary subject. As with all his work, the connection between the frame and the interior is unified through the use of tone, value and texture.
Framed 9 x 6 1/2 x 1 1/8 inches deep. Painting of subjects reading letters is one of Steve's favorites, and this one is no different. A lone woman, whose main focus is on a letter she has received, is surrounded by a thick and vibrant forest that seems to envelop her like a warm hug.
9 x 6 1/2 x 1 1/8 inch deep "Under the Stone Bridge" is a playful painting exploring the many joys of winter. The building of a snowman is a timeless activity and the enjoyment involved is equally pleasant.

He enjoys placing eager participants in engaging settings that foster their sense of adventure. Playing on a boat soldily captured in ice, is central stage, with many other activities surrounding it.

It can be, unless that path is frozen and meanders through the meadow, like the one these two are on. They slowly skate their way to their destination, all while enjoying each others company and the views.
